It has been an overwhelming couple of weeks here at the Hodson home. Libby has been remarkably brave about everything - checking her blood sugar; getting multiple shots a day; weighing, measuring and carb counting everything she eats; and putting up with her exhausted and inadequate parents. Luke and Isaac have been supportive and helpful and we have been blessed with love and support from family, friends and neighbors. We hope to make it through the weeks ahead (including going back to school next week - which terrifies me) and look forward to the years ahead when we are better adjusted to our new life. For now we say farewell to 2010 and hope for a better 2011.

  1. WOW! Q and I have both been talking about you guys over the last couple of weeks. We keep asking each other if we've talked to you guys lately...

Hmm. People always say that you should call someone when you keep thinking about them....

    That's scary!

    Libby you are SO brave!

  2. Sorry to hear about your sweet girl. It is so hard to watch your kids go through hard things. It only happens to the strongest kids. She must be something special. She probably learned it from her mom. Hang in there

  3. I am so sorry, Sarah!! What a difficult thing to go through for all of you. Your post is motivating me to get Eli checked (because he has to go to the bathroom alllll the time and it's hard to know if it's just because he's 3 1/2 and a little boy with a small bladder, or something serious). I hope things get easier for you soon.

  4. Dear Libby,

Thanks for posting on your family blog. We were sorry to hear that you had to spend time in the hospital but are glad that you are feeling a little better. We are also sorry that you have diabetes and know that it is no fun!

We were amazed to hear how brave you have been and our girls who are teenagers can't believe that you know how to do your blood tests and count your calories and have shots all the time. They are scared to death of that stuff and you are their new hero!

We know a few kids here in Chicago who have diabetes and they all do just great with sports and school and the other parts of their lives. Maggie has a friend in her dance classes who has an insulin pump. The girls in the class are always asking her to show them how it works and they are amazed that she knows just how to program it. I think they are even a little bit jealous. Isn't that funny?

We know that you and your parents and your brothers are strong and smart and you will be able to help each other get used to this new part of your life. We are thinking about you and praying for you. Good luck and keep up the good work Libby, we love you.

    XOXO Sharon Brown & Family

  5. Libby,
You are very brave. Needles and shots terrify me just as much as weighing myself in front of other people! I know a boy who is a little bit older than you who has diabetes. He was very scared at first, but now he's like a pro! He can check his blood sugar levels and knows just what foods are the best for him. I think that you will learn all of those things too.

You will have to be patient with your mom and dad because sometimes it takes them longer to learn things than for little kids. Remember how long it took your dad to finish school? See what I mean?

Now you tell your mom and dad to bring you to California. California is the BEST state. We have Disneyland, the beach and Yosemite in our state. We also have an orange tree in the backyard and a trampoline and lots of fun things.

Good luck with your mom and dad (you're going to need it).

  6. Also, I wish I had super blonde hair like you. It's very pretty! My hair is brown with lots of white.
