Chartres

Saturday we took a day trip to Chartres with the students.  We took a train (not Thomas the train to Luke's dismay) since Chartres is 50 miles southwest of Paris.  Our day centered around a tour of the Chartres cathedral.  It was a beautiful day and the cathedral is remarkable.

We ran into students at the metro on our way to the train station.

On the train.

Hot air balloon festival.  The countryside reminded me of Illinois.

In Chartres
Libby with some students friends and some construction equipment.
Luke with his friend Catherine.  He has convinced her to download
games he likes on her phone.

A large part of our tour involved "reading" the windows.  It was fascinating
to learn about the symbolism and storytelling of stained glass windows.

A piece of the Virgin Mary's veil.

The cathedral is dedicated to Mary (as many cathedrals are) this
chapel faces a statue of Mary (below).

Our tour guide, Malcolm Miller, has been doing tours at Chartres for over 50 years.

So many stairs!

Slowest photo bomb ever.

Lunch at a creperie.
Libby was so excited that we were eating in a restaurant and not just getting a sandwich from a stand.
