Montmartre . . . Again

A few weeks ago we were in Montmartre (a neighborhood in Paris up on a hill) and walked up to the Sacre-Coeur basilica.  We wanted to go back because we had skipped the neighborhoods of Montmartre and even though last time Chris got his life changing chicken/fish sandwich at the Chicken Stop, this time we wanted to see some beautiful views and historic artistic neighborhoods.

Thrilled to be on the metro.
The metro stop in Montmarte has at least a million steps to get to street level.
This time we followed the Parisians and took the elevator.

Stranger with a backpack blocking the view from the top of the hill.
So many stairs.

Luke decided this was much more efficient than the actual stairs.  It wasn't.
We visited the church of St. Pierre.  In stark contrast to sacre-couer and most of the other churches we have visited, it was almost empty.  It was nice to have a quiet moment to walk around and enjoy the beauty. The stained glass windows have been redone and had a lot more bright reds and yellows than other windows we've seen.  The church has a statue of St. Denis who was beheaded by the Romans in the third century and then, according to legend, carried his head down the north side of Montmartre before collapsing.

Montmartre used to be its own village and was full of vineyards.  Now this small area is all that is left.

On our way home we stopped by the church to do some study abroad related business and then got a treat at a boulangerie (bakery).  I'm just showing off my vast knowledge of the French language.

I had a piece of cake that was really not very good
so I was feeling pretty disappointed.
